The RIHPHC has produced a variety of publications that are available to download and/or print.


Over the past 26 years, the RIHPHC has produced 60 survey publications for each of the state’s 39 towns, for specific neighborhoods, and for thematic projects. The Easy Guide to Rehab Standards (1992) is helpful for local historic district commissioners to assist in evaluations of projects in their communities and for the property owners who are considering chages to a historic building and needs help in planning and carrying out the project.

The Guide to Lead Safety in Historic Buildings in Rhode Island (2007) is a one-stop resource for all Rhode Islanders who want to ensure the safety, character, and value of their historic buildings. This publication compiles steps to follow in planning a renovation project, resources on lead safety and historic buildings, contact information for state and local agencies, a glossary of terms, state laws and regulations, and funding sources.

New easy-to-use guides for walking tours or reference include Providence: A Brief Guide to the East Side (2012), Timeline of Rhode Island History (2012), and Historic Architectural Styles (2012). Take them for a walk through some of Providence's most architecturally and historically signficant neighborhoods or around other historic Rhode Island places.


Saving for the Future: A Statewide Preservation Plan for Rhode Island (2012) outlines existing preservation programs and sets out priorities and goals for the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission.
