Process/Recent Nominations

Nomination to and listing of properties in the National Register of Historic Places is a multi-step process, coordinated by the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission (RIHPHC). 

The National Register nomination form (including essays about the appearance and the historic significance of the property, photos, maps, plans, and the like) is typically prepared by an expert consulting preservationist. After RIHPHC staff review the form, they notify property owners as well as local, state, and federal officials and provide opportunity for comment. 

The form is forwarded for review by the State Review Board, which is composed of professionals in the fields of American history, architectural history, architecture, archeology, and other disciplines. The Review Board convenes for public meetings on the first Monday of alternating months (February - December). The board makes a recommendation to the State Historic Preservation Officer to approve the nomination if, in the Board's opinion, it meets the National Register criteria, or to disapprove the nomination if it does not.
