Heritage Programs: 2006 Heritage Festival

parade     From noon to dusk on Saturday, September 25, 2006, the RI Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission presented the 29th Annual Heritage Festival. The Rhode Island State House lawn, at the intersection of Gaspee and Francis streets, was the setting for this exciting and delicious event. 
    All day long, the stage showcased performances from around the world. Dancers from Bolivia, India, Korea, Philippines, and Cape Verde performed folk dances in traditional costumes, and a Japanese Lion Dance wound its way through the crowd. event picture A dozen tents featured exhibits of traditional art and clothing and delicious food from around the world. Visitors sampled Turkish baklava, Guatemalan mixtas, and British shortbread. They learned Korean Taekwondo, Japansese calligraphy, and Bolivian arts and crafts. Under the Children's Tent, they participated in face-painting and crafts. 
    The 2006 event included a joyous and colorful parade from Providence City Hall to the Festival at the State House lawn. parade

    Participants in 2006 included African-American, British, Bolivian, Cape Verdean, German, Greek, Guatemalan, Heritage Harbor, Hmong, Italian, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Lebanese, Mexican, Narragansett Indian, Panamanian, Philippino, Puerto Rican, RI Black Heritage, Scottish, Turkish, and Vietnamese Subcommittees.
