Heritage Programs: 2005 Heritage Festival

event picture From noon to dusk on Saturday, October 1, 2005, the RI Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission presents the 28th Annual Heritage Festival. The Rhode Island State House lawn, at the intersection of Gaspee and Francis streets, will be the setting for this exciting and delicious event.

All day long, the stage will showcase performances from around the world. Dancers from Bolivia, India, Guatemala, Korea, Philippines, and Cape Verde will perform folk dances in traditional costumes, and a Chinese Dragon Dance will wind its way through the crowd. Musical acts include a Scottish bagpiper and Inca Son, who play songs from the Peruvian Andes and throughout Latin America.   <<Click here for the performance schedule>>

A dozen tents will feature exhibits of traditional art and clothing and delicious food from around the world. Sample Turkish baklava, Guatemalan mixtas, and British shortbread. Learn how to make a Chinese kite, how to play traditional Colombian games, or how to decorate an egg the Ukrainian way. View the works on display by Hmong and African-American artists. Visit the Children's Tent for face-painting and crafts.

This year's event includes two colorful parades. Start the day at noon at Providence City Hall (25 Dorrance St., Downtown) and march to the Festival at the State House lawn. At the end of the festival, join the parade from the State House lawn to the lighting of WaterFire at Waterplace Park.  event picture
