| Gov. Donald Carcieri and RIHPHC Chair Fred Williamson congratulate Borders Farm Preservation Inc. on their 2006 State Preservation Grant award |
The 2006 State Preservation Grant awards, worth a total of $1 million, funded capital preservation work at 21 museums, cultural art centers, and public historic sites from 16 towns and cities around the state. The 21 State Preservation Grant projects were selected from a pool of 40 applications.
The list of grant recipients represents 16 Rhode Island communities, from Bristol to Westerly, Exeter to Pawtucket. It includes an array of Rhode Island communities and venues, from local treasures like the Borders Farm in Foster and Smithfield Exchange Bank to nationally significant sites like the elegant Château-sur-Mer in Newport and the Narragansett Towers designed by McKim, Mead and White. The grants will preserve such diverse structures as a historic lighthouse, a courthouse, and a barracks—not to mention three libraries and four town halls.
The $1 million in grant awards will go a long way by supporting projects with a total value of $18,290,326. Small grants will support small gems like one-room schoolhouses in Exeter and Johnston. Large grants of up to $100,000 will support important community landmarks like Pawtucket Armory, Pawtucket Public Library, North Light on Block Island, and the new headquarters for Providence CityArts for Youth and the CVS Highlander School. For every $1 invested, almost $17 of preservation activity is generated.
