The Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission operates one grant program and serves as a clearinghouse for information on other preservation grants and financial incentives.

Certified Local Government Grants are available for communities with Historic District Zoning. Eligible projects include identification and evaluation of significant historic and archaeological properties, the nomination of eligible properties to the National Register of Historic Places, historic preservation plans and certain education-related activities. Applications for the 2012 grant round are available now.

Preservation is Local Grants provided funds for preservation planning and documentation projects in 2009. This program ran one grant round to award $150,000 in 2009.

State Preservation Grants provided funds for capital preservation projects for museums, cultural art centers, and public historic sites located in historic structures. This program ran five grant rounds to award $6 million in 2003-2007.
